We adopt the European "salon" model of Death Café: free-flowing conversation around the topic of death-from-any-angle. Openness is the only pre-requisite. Our chosen professions - Audrey in grief recovery and Nancy in the prescriptive arts - have everything to do with why we steer away from the facilitated approach, guest speakers and "hands-on activities." Nothing impacts health and wellness more than a) repressed emotional statements about loss and regrets, and b) unexpressed doubts about one's coping strategies and belief systems. As NYC's pilot Death Café, we attract a wonderfully curious bunch of both listeners and storytellers - ranging from death doulas and Reiki masters, anthropologists and Jungian analysts to filmmakers, professors and chaplains, retired cops, and social workers.

Nancy Gershman, Prescriptive Artist
Art For Your Sake

Nancy Gershman knows how visualizing a preferred story can pave the way to healing. Nancy is a prescriptive artist who co-creates meaning-laden artwork for the bereaved or the dying’s struggle with loss and regrets. Her medium is digital photomontage. Each of her “Healing Dreamscapes” are positive self-belief stories or "preferred stories" fashioned from photos, memories, shared dreams and ah-ha! moments gleaned from therapy.

Nancy digitally reframes these elements, speaking to the emotional brain in the language it understands best: metaphors, symbols and sensory images. Her work has appeared in Annals of American Psychotherapy, Journal of Palliative Care, Loyola University Museum of Art (Chicago) and NYU Langone Medical Center. Follow "Tragicomedia;"Nancy's brilliant blog interviews with "darkly funny people about meaning-making, memory and loss."
