About this Death Cafe

Join us on December 7 at Discovery Green to talk about that thing we never talk about!  We love thoughtful conversation and generally prefer questions to answers.  Stuart and I met recently in the process of exploring possible collaborations for the Institute for Spirituality and Health (ISH) and Dawn Mountain Tibetan Buddhist Center, and when I stumbled upon the Death Cafe website I thought he would be the perfect partner for convening what looks like it will be Houston's first Death Cafe.  We look forward to getting this conversation going!

About Stuart Nelson and MaryScott Hagle

Stuart Nelson is Project Manager for the Institute for Spirituality and Health at the Texas Medical Center. He is a third culture kid who grew up overseas attending international schools. Stuart holds an M.A. in Religious Studies from UC Santa Barbara and a B.A. in Cognitive Science, Religious Studies and Psychology from Rice.    Eventually he would like to earn a PhD in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis on how religion appears in secular mental health contexts.  He has participated in almost every Critical Mass bike ride since its inception in Houston.

MaryScott Hagle is a native Houstonian, recovering architect and serial careerist who works as the executive director of Dawn Mountain, Houston's Tibetan Buddhist Community Center and Research Institute.  She holds a degree in Philosophy from Wellesley College and an M. Arch. from UT Austin. MaryScott has taught high school English, yoga, NIA, visual art, woodworking, and swimming, and she served for seven years as the Alley Theatre's director of education and community outreach.  A certified CFG faciliator, MaryScott coaches a group of new and alternatively certified teachers for HISD.  She lives in the Heights with her husband, architect Daniel Kornberg and their two teenage daughters.
