About this Death Cafe

This will be the 3rd Hamilton Death Cafe that has been hosted.  We have tried different locations and different days and times to try and reach a wide audience.

The conversations have been rich and engaging.  We have many return participants and still continue to draw a new participants from the community as well.

I look forward to hosting them monthly and belief in the social/global movement to continue the much need conversation about dying, death and life.

About Rebecca Daum

Host:  Rebecca Daum

Rebecca is a long time resident of Dundas, On - a small town on the very tip of Lake Ontario.  This beautiful valley town is home to a cozy little office where she has created  a safe and sacred space to companion clients while they journey through life and loss transitions.

With an abundance of professional experience in the corporate world Rebecca left that all behind 8 years ago when her father died unexpectedly after a motor vehicle accident that they were in together.  Her life changed so dramatically during that period of time that she knew returning to that once comfortable and rewarding corporate world didn’t quite make sense anymore.

After taking some time surmounting some of the challenges that this situation had presented her with, Rebecca and her husband Mark opened and ran a successful Music School in Brantford Ontario. They later sold the school when it became apparent that Rebecca still had healing to do.

It was during this healing time and while volunteering with Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice in Hamilton, Ontario, Rebecca discovered a renewed passion for working with people while in the caregiver role.

This soulful career path would allow her to companion others on their grief journey and utilize her personal experience to put meaning to a very tragic life event.

This led to Rebecca’s return to College to become a Counsellor;  to receive certification in Grief & Bereavement Studies with Dr. Allan Wolfelt in Colorado; to receive certification as a End of Life Practitioner at the Metta Institute in California;  to receive certification as a Thana-doula from the Institute of Traditional Medicine in Toronto;

and certification as a Home Funeral Guide through Final Passages and Jerri-Grace Lyons in California.

Education continues to play a huge role in Rebecca’a life and she has recently started a new program in Applied Mindfulness Meditation at the University of Toronto; enrolled in becoming a Reiki Practitioner; and looks forward to starting her Celebrant Training in 2014.

Rebecca maintains her volunteer role with MitoCanada on the Support Committee; and is currently seeking other volunteer opportunities.

Rebecca continues to hold memberships with Bereavement Resource Council of Niagara (BRCN), Bereavement Ontario Network (BON), Hospice Palliative Care Ontario  (HPCO) and The Association for Death Education and Counseling (ADEC).

Rebecca believes that every single person she meets shares one common desire.  They want to know... ‘Do you see me?’... ‘Do you hear me?’ and ‘Does what I say mean anything to you?’.  Understanding this one principle, that everybody wants to be heard, allows her to companion her clients with a mindful and contemplative approach while creating a safe and sacred place for them while on their journey, whether that be at End of Life or while mourning a loved one.  There will be no judgement, only honor, respect and empathy.
