About this Death Cafe

Initially, we expect to be small, however, wanting to meet the needs of our community in opening an on-going conversation about death, we will grow our size, as interest is generated!

Our format will be a group discussion, given

Our first meeting will be held in the Family Mediation Living Room at HEARING EACH OTHER/McKELL GRAFF, PLLC, a mediation/legal services business.  We will only be able to accommodate 9 people at the first meeting, but we will create a waiting list!If someone on our registered list cannot make it, we will call the waiting list.  We will also use the waiting list to determine whether we need a bigger venue for our summer Death Cafe to be held in July, 2014.

Our afternoon Death Cafe will provide coffee, a selection of teas (caffeinated and not), hot cider, and cold beverages, along with cake! If you bring a baked good to share, the suggested donation is waived!

Meredith McKell Graff, M.A., Esq.  practices family law and family mediation at McKELL GRAFF, PLLC, with Eugene M. Graff, her spouse in life and partner in practice.  Her law firm’s mission is “Resolving Conflict Peacefully.”  Meredith is a Certified Family Mediator with Washington Mediation Association.  In 2013, she created a “Family Mediation Living Room” for her new work, HEARING EACH OTHER, which offers mediation assistance and communication training to families with an elder family member whose life needs are changing or following the death of a family member.  Meredith received her law degree from S.J. Quinney College of Law, at University of Utah, a masters degree in Creative Writing/Poetry from Rutgers University, a bachelors degree from Loretto Heights College (now merged into Regis University) in Women Studies, and an associate of arts degree from Brigham Young University in Comparative Literature. Meredith is a chapter author in Contested Landscape:  Wilderness Policy in Utah and the West,  published by University of Utah Press in 1999, and The Bencher magazine, a publication for American Inns of Court (March/April, 2006), published her poem, “The Judge Said No,” that tells about the day she lost custody of her children.  Prior to entering law school at mid-life, Meredith taught college writing courses as a teaching assistant during her Masters program and later, as an adjunct professor, including, but not limited to, Introduction to Writing, Writing about Literature, and Persuasive Writing for Rutgers University, College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Weber State University, and Salt Lake Community College.  She also was licensed as an insurance producer in the state of New Jersey and held a Series 6 license with the NASD, working in the early 1990’s for Prudential Insurance Company of America, and later, Mutual of New York (“MONY”).  She was first trained in mediation in 1983 with the Center for Dispute Resolution (now CDR Associates) in Boulder, CO, as part of her “University Without Walls” program at Loretto Heights College.  She has been a member of Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) since its inception and is currently a member of Washington Mediation Association.  Meredith holds the highest “Superb” rating from Avvo.com, is a peer-rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, and was named “Volunteer of the Year” by Clark County Volunteer Lawyers Program in 2006 and “Professional of the Year in Family Law” by Cambridge Who’s Who in 2008.  She is currently secretary and has served as president and treasurer of the Clark County Bar’s Family Law Section and treasurer of Simpson Inn of American Inns of Court.  Meredith is a 15-year breast cancer survivor and a Twilight Brigade hospice volunteer. As a Reiki Master, she hosts and facilitates the Meetup Group, “Vancouver Transformations,” a Reiki Share Circle, that meets twice monthly in Vancouver, Washington.  Meredith will be a certified Celebrant in Funerals and Ceremonies for Healing in April, 2014, through the Celebrant Foundation and Institute.  She is excited to facilitate “Death Café in the ‘Couv” beginning on April 12, 2014, in her Family Mediation Living Room.
