About this Death Cafe
Penny and I met over coffee on a Wednesday evening, both strangers, both passionate about the field of death, dying, grief and loss. In a matter of seconds, we had a connection and a shared passion. We both believe in giving back to the community and this is how we wanted to give back.
At Death Cafe Saskatoon, we plan to create an environment of openness and comfort while rooting ourselves in a topic that has been taboo.
This will be an opportunity to join other members of the community, sip coffee, enjoy cake and immerse ourselves in what will we know will be a fulfilling evening filled with with though provoking conversation.
We would like to acknowledge a sponsor who has provided us with the event space, Prairie Sun Brewery.

Penny Aadland
Licensed Funeral Director in the Province of Saskatchewan
Death Care Consultant
Celebrant
Having worked in the funeral industry I became aware of how little the average person knows about what happens during the death care process; I am passionate about education people about this. I want everyone to know that death care can be less invasive and a much more hands on experience than led to believe. Also, I believe in returning to a simpler, kinder way to care for our deceased. By helping promote the topic of death openly into our society, people will understand that death is a part of life and it is OK to talk about it.
Lisa Greig
Registered Social Worker
Owner/ Creator at Silver Linings Events
As a social worker, I have experience in both acute care settings as well as in the community as a Bereavement Counsellor. I am extremely passionate about the field of death, dying and bereavement. Death, is life’s one certainty. It is painful. It is dynamic. It is filled with sorrow but also opportunities for growth. As a social worker, I am rooted in the practice of leaning into the discomforts; the topic of death is one of those discomforts. It is my hope that the Death Cafe will provide an opportunity within the community to have an open, honest discussion that will quickly evolve into a place of comfort, awareness and growth towards a culture that is no longer death-avoidant.
